1883 

First known dam on the river created ½ mile below site of the old San Clemente Dam. Pacific Improvement Company hires 700 Chinese laborers to work building the dam and laying a 12 inch iron pipe down Carmel Valley and around the coast to their new Del Monte Hotel and nearby Monterey. Windmills and cisterns in Monterey were abandoned. (Vandevere) The water was piped 25 miles and crossed the Carmel River five times.
