Father Junípero Serra established the Carmel Mission in 1770 at the Presidio of Monterey.  With the arrival of the Spanish Mission, the Rumsen people supported missionaries by sharing their forage and cultivation knowledge. This relationship shifted with  the forced conversion of tribal members to Christianity and  resettlement into the mission.

A key focus in the following years was to establish irrigation and farming to support the incoming spanish population
